Action Comics #1 (Vol 2)

I'm a little late on this but I finally got around to reading some of the DC 52 series relaunches. What I mean by that is that they finally got them here at the library. We got Action comics 1-3, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman. IDK.

I can see why DC feels the need to stir the pot. Comics are really in the toilet, I mean the business. Creatively comics are still alive and well but it's like a tree in the forest that no one is around to hear.

I wasn't sure how to feel about the whole thing really, like I said, I understand why they did it but I wasn't sure that it was going to be good, the books I mean. They can try all of the trickery that they want but if the books are wack then it doesn't really matter does it?

So, being too cheap to go down and buy the books I had put the whole thing out of my mind until the first three issues of Action Comics appeared here at the library (that's where I work). I was pretty stoked because I didn't have anything cool to read that day and it was my old ladies night to watch Top Chef or something. I needed to keep my mind occupied during the program or I would literally go insane. Like literally...

Anyhow, I really dug the Action Comics. What they did was they went and took Superman and reverted him back to his pre-God-like powers days and started his tale anew. I like that idea. Supes was just way too strong to be really interesting. He's always been awesome but at his previous power levels it was just too hard to get the heat on him and as any wrestling fan will tell you, the babyface has got to get the beatdown before he can make a fiery comeback and it's the comeback and waiting for the comeback that keeps you glued to your seats.

Another thing that they did that harkens back to the days of yore is that they made Superman an idealistic young man who is taking it back to all the fat cats that make up what we would call "the 1%" nowadays.

Back when he first started Superman was a champion of the people and at the time people where unionizing and fighting for their rights in the workplace and for the rights to decent living conditions and basically the right to be treated as human beings. That's the oddly timely take that the comic is on now. Superman goes out there and fights for the people as a true hero of the working man. You can tell that he is on the side of the the working class because he wears construction boots and jeans along with his Super Shirt and cape.

Anyhow, I really dug it. I'd have to say that I dug it enough that I will prolly go down to the Comic Shoppe and have them start pulling it for me on a monthly basis. Honestly, I've wanted to get back into the monthly comic game again for awhile now but haven't wanted to wade through continuity and have to spend time and money getting caught up on current story lines. DC's relaunch might be the perfect jump off point to get back onto the field.
